Course Description
Sixth grade visual art class is designed to guide students to develop a deeper awareness and appreciation of art and its
techniques, history, and visual problem solving, as well as understand the connections between art and other academic
disciplines. This sixth grade course at Eagle Ridge Academy is built from the Core Knowledge Curriculum,
as well as national and state level visual art standards. Sixth graders will receive a brief art history overview starting with Prehistoric Art, then moving into Classical Art through Realism. Students will continue to learn about the Elements & Principles of Art/Design through creating, observing, writing, and talking about art. Students will be exposed to key figures, groups, movements, and artworks throughout the course of art history as well as the deep thinking and choices that go into creating an original work of art.

Daily Expectations
SIXTH GRADE STUDENTS WILL:
1. Be kind towards all members of class, as well as the perspectives and ideas of other artists we study.
2. Be respectful of all members of class and the classroom environment, such as materials and space
3. Be responsible for following directions, staying on task, taking notes when appropriate and participating
4. Be safe by keeping movements calm, pushing in chairs, and using art-making tools and other classroom materials appropriately.

Grading
GRADES WILL BE WEIGHTED AS FOLLOWS:
• 50% Self-assessed projects
• 30% Sketchbook assignments (homework) and other classwork
• 20% Art history quizzes

Grading Scale

Late Work
Late work can earn a score of up to 60 percent of the total possible points. Late work will be accepted up to the end of the following
unit (no more than two units behind). Extenuating circumstances may result in a due date extension, and should be discussed on an individual basis.

A student who is absent from school will be given the day back to school plus one additional day for each day absent to
